Mara is from London, United Kingdom. As a self described "Survivor" of Makers Academy, Mara went from being a contract tech recruiter to a Junior Developer at the Financial Times.
What were you doing before joining Makers Academy?
I was working as a tech recruiter.
What made you want to start learning to code in the first place?
In previous jobs I had to use awful databases. I wanted to build better systems to make life easier for people.
How did you come across Makers Academy and what made you decide to apply?
A company I was working for was hiring from Makers. I researched all other coding bootcamps and came to a very firm decision to go with Makers.
What did you find difficult during the course?
I was constantly feeling stupid and then returned home brain fried every day.
What happened during/after graduation and where are you job-wise?
I used all of my contacts and Makers Academy Hiring Partners to get introductions into companies without having to apply the traditional way and kept a spreadsheet to track progress. The careers team helped me get a job at The Financial Times.
What advice would you give to people thinking of changing career?
It's life changing - just go and do it. Make sure to save more than you think you need, last thing you want is to run out of money.
What do you say to people who say £8000 is expensive?
It's a life investment that will free you out of a boring job. Think about the university degrees we all have, they were far more expensive, time consuming and totally worthless in the real world.
What was your biggest worry before joining Makers Academy and how do you feel about it now?
Not keeping up. I made peace with the feeling of discomfort and working past the limit of my current knowledge and somehow became not too shabby at this coding thing.
